Re: What's the scariest car failure you've had while driving?
Interesting times when driving police cars (many years ago..)
1. Austin A60 Countryman.
(1) Pendant brake and clutch pedals on a common shaft. Both pedals fell off completely when emerging from a 'T' junction. Fortunately low speed and nothing coming at the time. Handbrake on them wasn't brilliant but it did stop eventually.
(2) Exhaust detached at manifold, gouged into road and ripped off the complete system. What a racket.
2. Hillman Hunter GT. Gear lever came off in my hand (honest, guv!). Got back to base with passenger stirring around in the hole with the end of the wheelbrace.
3. Vauxhall Ventora 3.3. Very fast descent of a hill into a dip with rising gradient on the other side. Front suspension bottomed out and stayed down - completely collapsed. Aftermath of that was that new parts from Vauxhall wouldn't fit. They insisted they'd sent the right parts but sent out an engineer after more argument. Transpired the car was an export model intended for Peru. This was supposedly the special uprated police model. We always thought they sold us c**p - export rejects!
BTW - glowing front brake discs on the Granada 2.8's were a regular occurrence.
