I've found that cruise works well enough while towing on a motorway or dual carriageway, provided that the traffic is flowing well enough for me to hold 60 all the time. A few motorway gradients may require a drop down to 5th (which disengages the cruise) so sometimes I just get lazy and leave it in 5th. It's rare that I need to drop down to 4th, and I've only ever had to go as low as 3rd once to hold 60, and that was on Rhuallt hill on the A55 (which is pretty damned steep.)

For A-roads, I tend to switch to the limter and leave it set to 52mph (50 on the nail according to GPS.) That way I can devote my full attention to the road rather than having to keep an eye on the speedo all the time. It's far too easy to drag up to 60 on the straights without the limiter.
