Speed Limits & Pollution
There was a piece on the news yesterday about how we need to find 'cleaner fuels' to combat pollution/global warming.
I have a simpler, and FREE method of reducing pollution.
Scrap those ridiculous 20mph speed limit zones in urban areas!
and also some of the unneccessary 30mph zones as well.
Most cars are simply not designed to travel at constant speeds of 20 or 30 mph. My 2.0 Lag automatic is in 2nd gear at 20mph, turning over at 1500 rpm. At 30 it is in 3rd gear at 1600rpm.
To travel a mile at 30mph = 120secs at 1600rpm = 3200 revolutions.
To travel a mile at 20mph = 180 secs at 1500rpm = 4500
So driving at 20mph instead of 30mph takes 40% longer using 40% more fuel and producing 40% more emmissions to travel the same distance.
Anybody want to start a campaign to save the planet by driving at a sensible speed ?
