I've just managed to get the alternator off a clio. It took about four hours! I removed front o/s wheel, spent considerable time just loosening the two bolts (should get myself a ratchet), then the wiring - from underneath and with very poor access.

Next I found that I couldn't get it out of the recesses of the engine compartment. I thought about disconnecting the steering knuckle or removing the fan and pulley. All very demoralising

I looked again at the Hayne's manual which said to take the thing out through the top of the engine bay. So had another try. The alternator is oval and passes by the steering column in one orientation only then wiggles by the starter and finally out near the battery. Now to find out why the alternator is draining the battery!
