If one operates the handbrake arm by hand this will push the piston out on a screw thread. IIRC the direction is according to which side of the car the caliper is from.
FWIW, I clamp the rubber hose & open the bleed nipple whilst doing this. Saves getting air anywhere other than in the caliper. Also to have an easy bleed, I fit the pads & a dummy disc (spanner of suitable thickness), suspend the caliper with the bleed nipple uppermost, so the air rises easily, once bled, refit. Simples
