If Hubby as one of those cheap multi meters you could check the glow plugs and if in fact it is anything to do with the alternator you would be able to check the battery volts, see if the volts are low just after starting and if when they rise that is when the car starts to answer the pedal, if he as not got one a early Christmas present is called for he may smell a rat but it may help find the problem, this kind of thing would do you may need a pp3 battery to go with it, when you start it does the power steering light go out before the engine speed rises or after?

Who would design a vehicle that falls over when you stop?
