It's very unlikely the engine cover as anything to do with it Diesels don't normally get affected with damp, the glow plugs all screw in what the add most likely refers too is how the connections on the top are fitted and the ones I have seen have all been push fit on the dci 1.5 but worth a check, the org ones can die about 50,000 miles I have a liking for NGK but nothing wrong with Bosch, I was once told that a failing temp sender can cause the problems you are having there are 2 on your engine I think, if you can find them it may be worth checking the connections too them, it could be worth getting the codes read when the car is stone cold see if anything shows up I had a petrol a while back with similar problems and that was a bad connection on a temp sensor but they are a totally different beast.
Be careful removing the plugs they can snap blow any crud from round them then run a little easing oil round them, just try to move them a little and work them back and forth a little don't try and just wind them straight out, be careful not to cross thread the new ones.

Who would design a vehicle that falls over when you stop?
