Replacing 97 scenic tape player

Hi, I just bought my wife a 97 scenic which we are really pleased with. Only downer is this object in the middle of the centre console with some buttons and a rectangular hole in it. Now pressing the buttons turns on the device and radio stations are recieved. However, I can't work out what the rectangular hole is for.

seriously folks, what do I need to get to replace the t.d with a cd player , still allowing the stalk controls and ideally (but not essentially) the display. Is it a case of just plugging the new unit in, or is it a job for an auto electrician?

cheers guys
