I had problems with mine, not because of an attempted break in though. I think the lock had got rusty.
I was able to open the tailgate from the inside as suggested by the other poster. I seem to remember a red bit of plastic on the left of the lock that i flicked up or down. I didn't need a screwdriver just my fingers. I'm pretty sure it could be opened and then locked again this way.
I eventually got the lock fixed by spraying WD40 into it then onto the key and pushing the key in and out of the lock. It still needs this treatment now and again
