Personally I wouldn't worry about the shims,they are primarily there to prevent brake squeal but most aftermarket pads have a backing stuck them anyway which renders the shims useless.They have no bearing on adjustment at all.
If the pads do start to squeal (which I doubt very much on the rear of a Trafic),then you can use either some brake grease (not copper slip),or you can buy some self adhesive backings for them from any decent motor factor.Otherwise I really,really wouldn't be worried about them.
