Question Electric handbrake grand scenic 1.6 2005

Hi, I hope someone can help. I have a big problem with the electric handbrake on my grand scenic 1.6 2005. I had disconected and reconnected my battery earlier today. As I was walking away I heard a high pitched sqealing noise from back of car.I tried to drive off shortly afterwards only to find that the rear wheels were locked solid.I cannot get handbrake control switch to release them.It just makes high pitched noise. The emergency release handle in boot doesnt even release them.(suspect broken cable) I then tried to remove unit from car but cannot get cables off the callipers as they are engaged on. I had jack up car place boards under wheels to drag/slide back wheels to get car out of runway as it was blocking my other car.I noticed that driver side was turning but passenger side locked solid. What do I do now ?Do i need to cut cables off to remove unit ?Any ideas what problem could be ?
