Sorry - I though you might have had a response to this by now. "Safe" or "Limp Home" mode is employed by the computer to allow you to continue to drive but to protect the engine by limiting the performance of the vehicle. It's designed to get you back to the dealer...
yes just my "tuppence " worth safe mode is exactly that - it can sometimes be called "Limp" mode as the car prohibits performance and staggers home/ dealer etc
