Cheap runabout - worth a punt?

Hi All

I’ve had a few old and newer Renaults in the past including Lagunas, Esapces (terrible) and a Safrane (best car I ever owned!)

I’m currently after a cheap 2nd run about for the Mrs and plan to go look at a year 2000 ‘W’ plate Laguna 1.9 dti RXE automatic this evening. MOT to Oct, tax to May, 138k with “some” history. Spoke to owner who says it runs spot on with no faults including auto gearbox – don’t they all say that? Bodywork has just the odd age related mark apparently… we’ll see. The guy only wants £550 for it so if its straight and I get it for £500, I would be happy to spend a few quid on a service etc.

Anyway, I haven’t had a diesel before so was wondering, apart from the usual things to look for, is there anything I should check more carefully based on this specific model, miles etc? Turbo ? Any hints or tips gratefully appreciated.
