I would say it depends on the car, and how long you expect to keep it.

If you read the forums as much as I have, you'll notice that with the exception of rust around Clio fuel filler caps - Renaults don't really rust.

The other way to view that info, is that they get scrapped for other reasons (i.e. mechanical or electrical reasons).

I underseal my older cars, mainly as prevention is always much cheaper than cure, but modern cars (like the merc) have so much plastic shielding to remove, its not worth the hassle - plus knowing the OH, we won't be keeping it until its over 40 year's old...
