Yep,the gauge is for the engine
As for the gearstick movement,this is pretty much par for the course on most Renualts of this period.There is a lot of back and foward movement as standard,although it can be made worse by a worn lower engine stabilizer.You should be able to see it at the back of the engine from underneath.Sometimes the bushes in it get worn or weak,so it might be worth checking that.
