Is a 2008 Espace 2.0dci worth keeping even if its free?
I am about to inherit a regularly maintained 2008 Grand Espace 2.0dci auto with 57,000 miles on the clock. I have never owned a Renault but two of my brothers have had second hand Scenics and both got rid of them within the first year of ownership after being hit with numerous expensive repair bills.
I currently own a 2000 Toyota Previa 7 seater which, despite having the driving characteristics of a Ford Transit - actually the new Transits probably drive better than my Previa!! - I have had 7 years of trouble free motoring with 105,000 miles on the clock. The thing just never goes wrong but I do service it every year regardless of mileage.
So Ive done a bit of Googling on the Espace and almost wish I hadnt. The amount of bad press these cars get is incredible for a major manufacturer. Even my own garage (which specialises in French & Italian cars - Im starting to understand why) has warned me to get rid of it at the earliest opportunity. The term 'Money Pit' has been mentioned on more than one occasion!
So is all this bad press warranted? Am I about to inherit a poisoned chalice? Can this car really be as bad as people say it is in terms of maintenance costs, problems, general unreliability? I was hoping that post Matra cars would be better but it doesnt seem to be the case.
Would really appreciate some views of owners who have first hand experience of this generation of Espaces.
