I remember colour coding the black rough surface door trims on my wife's golf few years back. I had to sand and flatten down the roughness. Then 2K primer. Giving it a very smooth finish. Then.. Rub down & clean, then base coats and clear coats. I got a very good finish with it.
The trims were hit by doors many times without a single bit of damage to the paint. They were also scuffed once by a car scraping against it, no damage to paintwork at all.
Getting the primer on properly is the most important part. And on the rough surface of those trims, the primer will not adhere at all without some kind of rub down
