Consumer law is not always clear in this respect.
When the product was bought first it came with a time-limited guarantee by the manufacturer not the dealer. In this case the dealer has no responsibility to extend any guarantee as he is only acting as an agent for the car manufacturer.
It is the complete vehicle that is warranted, not the individual part. Thus the manufacturer guarantees to repair / replace items to keep the whole product working for the period of the original warranty only. In other words if the manufacturer fulfils his terms of the original contract then they no longer have responsibility onces it ceases.
Further research or advice from a consumer advice centre may clarify the situation.
