I can understand why you feel how you do, but it's not a scam, it's simply how it is.

I'm sure the van will be fine once the changeover is made.

Bear in mind, that the situation you face would've been much worse, if it had occured once the warranty elapsed - then yes, you would've been paying a percentage (a sizeable one), and the 1 year's warranty on the engine might've appeared cold comfort, by way of return.
