I have towed with all versions of the Espace, and all the diesels, usually a caravan weighing 1300 Kg, and did not experience any lack of power, right into European touring. Up to 80MPH was possible even with the 89HP original diesel and in 5th gear.
On Motorway steep hills as M6 in the Lakes, M5 Winchester, it will be necessary to down shift to 4th gear, maybe 3rd exceptionally. If there is a strong headwind, or even sidewind, this will increase the caravan's drag enormously, and slow you down unless clog it hard. The 2.2 DT increaed the Espace weight by 300Kg, so you will notice this on hills, as the torque did not increase in proportion till the 2.2 dci which I now own.
Is you engine running OK? - Air filter clogged?
