Handbrake rachet worn, how can i tell?

Have just come from MOT centre with a fail after being told that my Handbrake ratchet mechanism is excessively worn. how can i check this before i book it in for repair as it does not feel worn to me. there is no movement on handbrake when applied so feel like garage is trying it on. the car is a clio campus 1.1 2008 reg. thanks in advance for any advice
