Well, 70 miles is the 'trigger point' where the display will change to the ---- , but it really has to be remembered that this display is an approximation of an average mpg based on the historical info since the computer was re-set.
It is by no means a guarantee that the car would cover the miles displayed to empty (which is why, I believe Renault removes the mileage shown, at this point).
I completely understand about the price of fuel - since its now well over £100 to fill my van, it's a long time since I've done that also.
It would probably be better for you just to stick some fuel in when the display changes - as even the gauges can suffer from errors - and running out of petrol is quite an embarassing failure, mainly because it is usually avoidable,
This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.
