I've got an idea, for 'preventative' purposes during such work:
While the captive nuts are still where they should be, I'm thinking I will use grub screws instead of a bolt. That way, there will be a stud on which to put a nut, rather than a loose and vulnerable captive nut to try to screw the bolt into.
Does not completely eliminate the risk of pushing captive nuts through, but as a 'stud' (with a grub screw sticking out) at least there is something to half get a hold of as you are unscrewing the nut. You can wind the grub screw out a little further when dismantling, and the stud will help reduce the chance of the captive nut dropping through.
Do you think this might be a good idea and useful 'upgrade', whenever working with a captive nut situation?
