A few questions first....
Does the cooling fan cut in at all?
Does the thermostat seem to open OK?
Is there a leak somewhere/have you had to top up the coolant recently?.
At any stage in the past, have you used any rad seal in it?

I've got a few other ideas, but check these out first.
Hi Lagdti

Now that you mention it I cant remember see or hearing the fan come one, as to the thermostat Iwould need to take it out to have alook at it and test it, thats 2 points for me to investigate. Oh its a 1400 engine.
I have had to replace the cap that fits on the coolant bottle before, if this were to stop working, therefore releasing the hot water could this also cause the car to over heat?
