Replaceing a column switch isn't usually much hassle on that age of car. It usually involves taking the column shroud off, (possibly the steering wheel too) undoing some bolts/screws & a multiplug, then putting it back together again.
The alternator light coming on could be a dodgy alternator or a bad connection (12v units should charged about 14v). The best way to determiine is look in the phone book/yellow pages for an auto electrician & get them to run a test on it. Replacing the alternator is usually pretty straightforward, again the basic idea is a few bolts & a wiring multiplug (I find tensioning the belt the hardest).
