Question Fuel gauge problem

I've got an 03 renault megane. And the other day I was driving along and the fuel light came on, so I drove for another 5 mile and then I filled my car up with 10. But when I started the car up after the light was still on and the fuel gauge hadn't moved. So I thought I would give it some time, and I've been out driving a few times but it's still on and the fuel gauge has now came right down to empty, but I do still have fuel in my car, becuase I filled up another 5 the day after thinking it would help but nothing!! So I have absolutely no idea of knowing how much fuel I've got in my car and I have no idea what's wrong, I'm assuming it has something to do with the sensor in the tank. Please help!! Don't know what to do, if I take it to a garage would it be expensive to fix? Thankful for any help!!
