There will be a number of pipes in your fuel tank, for filling-up and fuel deliverey & return pipes leading to & from the engine. There will also be one (very close to the highest point of the tank, I'd imagine), which is just vented off - this is the breather pipe, otherwise known as an overflow.

Its purpose is 2-fold, the first is to prevent a vacuum occuring as the fuel level reduces, and the second reason is to prevent the tank from over-pressurising if it has been brimmed and then parked in hot conditions (fuel, like all liquids expands with heat).

A garage could check this for you at a nominal cost, I would imagine.
