The car has several computers, with the ECU controlling the engine. What I suspect they're actually referring to is the UCH , which controls many of the non-engine related electrical functions.

If it has gone, then it will be an expensive fix. What's more, for supposed security reasons, the UCH is one-shot coded to the ECU , meaning that a second-hand part is not an option. On top of that, you need the Renault CLIP computer to code a new unit to the ECU and the chip in the key. In a nutshell, if it's the UCH , then the dealer has you over a barrel.

But it's well worth shopping around various dealers to see if you can find a cheaper one. What's more, we have a forum discount for 'veteran users' that gets you a variable percentage off parts at REA network dealers. Post a few more times and you should qualify for a reasonable discount on the part (though that's not much help if you need this fixed urgently.)
