Unhappy Clio2 Rear Brakes

Hi, all. I hope somebody will be able to help me.My daughter runs a lovely clio grande 1.2 8v on a 2000 plate. We are having trouble with the rear brakes and handbrake. The handbrake travels along way and is not very effective. The rear brakes are Bendix.I have checked N/S and the adjuster is seized.Freed off but brakes still not adjusting and we have a long travel pedal. My question is Can we discard the bendix set up and fit Girling brakes complete or is the backplate and drum unique to each type of brake?????
i hope somebody can help, otherwise its going to be a very expensive visit to the dealer.
Cheers Andrew (nottsv50)
