It sounds like the guy who sold you the car is constantly fobbing you off eg phone the garage, contact this person that person etc. It should have been up to him to sort it out for you.

The timing belt could have been cut off to remove it after the damage was done? Maybe it was tangled up. Or if it was an old belt it may have had a crack which failed leaving the belt looking like it had been cut. Obviously you aren't going to strip down the car yourself to cut the belt before reassembling it all and turning the engine over to cause damage.

Also if there was a warranty with the car then this would normally be provided by a third party company such as WMS. You would have had to sign the application form and usually there would be a maximum limit per claim of up to 500 up to the value of the car. So if the car was sold for 2,000 then you could make 4 claims of 500 per time.

It could be he did not take out a warranty until after the car became faulty without you knowing anything about it. A 3 month warranty typically costs about 59 + VAT to a trader. By asking you to contribute to the costs of repair he may have been making a 500 claim on an 800 repair and you footed the 300 difference and it cost him nothing!

Anyway that is just speculation on my part. If you get nowhere then use Money Claim Online. They write to him recorded delivery and he has to do something about it or else it will be awarded in your favour. You could ask for the cost of the car plus the 300 you spent plus the cost of using Money Claim plus maybe the costs of fuel etc for all the various trips you had to make.

If he decides to contest it and you have to go to a court then I believe he can request it is moved to his local magistrates court as he is the defendant. If you had to go to court then you would have a very strong case, just present the facts clearly without getting angry or being disrespectful to the other guy even though you want to strangle him.

If you go down this route please research what you can reasonably claim and how the process works though as I would not like to give you duff advice.

Good luck and keep us posted of the outcome.
