On cars with ABS it is recommended to open a bleed screw when retracting a caliper piston. The reason being the valves in the ABS control unit don't always take kindly to having fluid forced in the wrong direction.

I have came across this problem twice - once on a Honda Civic and once on a Puegot. After a lot of faffing around the Honda eventually was sorted but the Pug need a replacment ABS unit. The chances of this occuring may be low but why take the risk.
