3 big reasons for turbo failure on 1.9's

the single biggest reason is the service interval is FAR too long on the 1.9 engine. this results in degraded oil not cooling the turbo properly.

2nd reason you have already touched on. not allowing the turbo to cool after a high speed run.

3rd would be Garrett's fault, a design fault in the turbo plumbing, basically, the feed and return pipes are too small, and silt (going back to reason one) narrows them further and starves the turbo of oil .

so my solution to this (and the reason my ex lag 1.9 is still going strong) is to change the oil yearly, or at half the stated mileage, whichever comes sooner.
