I would agree the undertray can reduce noise being relected of the hard road surface but one other point to consider is that if a small stone or debris gets into the auxuliary belt and it fails it can also take the timing belt with it. Strangely enough I have only ever seen this occur on French engines.

No doubt if other members have heard of similar issues on other makes they'll soon let me know.
