it sounds like they started the car and stopped it again causing the handbrake to operate with out reconnecting the handbrake cables to the caliper first

when that's done the cables wind back into the control box too far and it knackers the control box.

They have then pulled them out and reconnected them, but by then its to late the damage has been done.

Its your word against theirs and you may have to sue them in the small claims court.
