Clio Loose Handbrake

Hi there,

Just picked up my first car yesterday, a 2001 Clio Authentique. I've noticed the handbrake is very loose and only becomes firmer very high up, with very little holding power even when dragged to the very top. I tried to park on our fairly steep drive earlier today and it simply started rolling back down.

The car brakes absolutely fine otherwise - so I'm not quite sure where the fault lies. Is this a loose handbrake cable, as I've read in some places it self adjusts, or is this an issue with the brakes themselves?

Any help is much appreciated to try and solve this problem as I'd rather not be told a load of nonsense by a dodgy garage - as you can tell I'm not that mechanically minded!

Thank you in advance
