The dipped beam should be correctly adjusted at position 0 on the "wheel" that adjust the headlamps .
1,2,3 and 4 are supposedly only to adust the lamps if carrying a full complement of passengers /luggage and or towing.
So 0 should be full height and the other positions the lamps will progressively lower.
Point the car at a white wall in dull light ,about 15 ft away should do.
If you cant see them moving. the adjuster must be gone or motor.
For a rhd setup the nearside headlight beam should be either on a level with the ds one or barely above it.
you can do a rough adjustment of beams yourself(there must be manual adjusters on the headlamps also) with crosses marked on the wall with masking tape etc.,but if they arent aligned correctly on position 0 for the MoT it might not pass so probably have to get it done professionally . with their mirrors n beam machines.
There is also a "wheel" on my mk III megane which is right beside the knurled knob that adjust headlight height.,this only adjusts the intensity of the dash lights at night.
Auto leveling lights .. well I dont know.
Get 3 "hefty" friends to sit in the back,if the beam spots on the wall stay where they were with no load..the beams might be self lvling. If the spots move up they arent?
