Second hand handbrake part number

I bought a second hand handbrake unit as mine has failed (what a surprise), however, my mechanic said it doesn't fit, so I'm now stuck with a handbrake that's no good to me!
Apparently there are a million different part numbers on the handbrake.
Can anyone help with which of the many numbers need to match, or do they all need to?
I've had quotes of breaker yards, but I'm reluctant to buy another and have the same issue again with it not fitting.
Thanks in advance.
