I stopped having trouble with Scotchloks when I discovered the knack for using them properly. Don't go near them with pliers, use mole grips instead.

Mole grips will both squeeze the blade in more squarely and give you more leverage.

As long as you use the correct colour for the gauge of wire and make sure that the blade goes in squarely and cleanly, I find that they tend to do what they're supposed to.
