Handbrake fault and binding brake help :-)

I recently bought a grand scenic 2005. The problem is the auto handbrake doesn't work and displays the check parking brake.

I removed the complete unit to have a look for anything obvious, the only thing i did find is that o/s brake is binding and as result not much movement in the caliper arm that the handbrake unit connects to.

My question is could this binding/stiff caliper arm be the cause of the handbrake fault? Or could this of possibly caused the motor in the unit to fail?
If I was to wind back the piston in the caliper will the unit sort its self out if that was the problem?

I have put the handbrake back on once and tried to reset the handbrake but as far as I am aware the motor in the unit did not move at all, I didn't hear or see any action from the handbrake unit.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
