The computer only makes a guessimate as to miles remaining based on the previous mpg. So for instance if you were driving a long distance at a steady speed (good mpg) then the computer assumes the mpg will remain constant and vice versa if you were driving in slow moving traffic (poor mpg).
Ideally you need to reset the computer each time you fill up.

I wouldn't say the onboard computer is a liar but it is definitely economic with the truth at the best of times.
