Abs or not

Probably a totally stupid question, I have Abs on my car, or do I.
I start the car, an abs light on the dash comes on and then goes off, I also have leads going to the front wheel hubs.
I have driven cars with abs but never owned one, l have always had very old cars

I was out the other week and had two cars pull out on me, one head on, both times I was pretty heavy on the brakes, It was a nice sunny day and all the tyres are good, but I did screech to a stop, both times, this was under 30mph.

The problem is, if any, I didn't feel any pedal movement or any indication that I had actually got any abs, even though the brakes are very good anyway.

I wouldn't like to brake hard in the wet and find the its not doing what it should, or have I get it all wrong about abs.
