brake compensator/load bearing valve?

Hi all,
I have a problem which hopefully you'll be aable to help me solve.
I have a 2001 Renault Kangoo van and the load bearing valve has ceased up.
I've gave it a good clean and gave it a generous blasting of wd40. Now, after doing this I have got it moving.
my question is, how much play should there be on this part? I can move it about an inch or so give or take. I need to sort it out asap as I have to book it in for an MOT but also know it is an MOT failure if it's not properly working.
Thanks for any advice you may have.
