Re: Renault - Clio - Starting Problems - A solution???
Had this problem and resolved it. Your sysmptoms sound indentical, and there should be a record of it in the FAQ.
You need to check the 'Earth Strap', which is tucked away on the nearside of the engine bay, down by the gearbox, and links the chassis (earth) to the engine block. Because of its position it is exposed to the elements and unlike other Renaults is not coated. It should appear as a braided cable about 1 inch thick. This is what carries the load for engine start and in my case it had corroded and crumbled to dust when I touched it. The electrics otherwise worked fine. A new one from the local parts supplier was a couple of quid and can be fitted in about 10 mins. Suggest you put some wax
or something similar on the new one before fitting it as it will corrode as well unless you can find one which is coated.
Best of luck.
Out of interest, would this be most easily diagnosable by ensuring a connection from the negative terminal to the frame using a jump lead?
