Replaced the mini relays (AGAIN ) in the underbonnet relay/fuse box, and all is well.

Will have to break out a 12v supply and dummy load and see how the removed ones respond.

I bought two at 40-and-a-bit because I still had one known-good one. So, if you want to do all three and be sure about it, that's roughly sixty quid. Getting access to the damn things and removing the old ones is the hardest part - you'll likely have to disconnect the negative battery lead to get the box lid off, then displace the sub-tray that the relays sit on, and drag them out with a pair of plier like a mediaeval vet pulling rotten teeth out of a horse's mouth. The new ones push in relatively easy afterwards, though you may need to give a fairly positive shove to make them click home properly.
