Take the car for a drive in the dark, leave a bit of distance between you and the car in front, then floor the gas.
As you start to accelerate, you'll notice the light beam move upwards on the boot of the car in front, but the beam will immediately correct itself, even though the car is still accelerating. Lay off the gas, and you'll see the beams dip lower on the boot of the car in front, then correct themselves again.
If they don't do this, then the levellers aren't working. Of course, when doing this take care not to drive into the rear of the car you're following
