My UK insurance allows 90 consecutive days abroad in the EU, with a condition that I have to contact them if I will be away longer. You could be away 89 days then drive cross the channel for a day. The 90 days then starts again. A bit cheeky, but probably not illegal. Then you can just use the headlamp converters while you're away. Just a thought!!!!!
