Re: Buying a Clio Advise Please
Got a 1.2 8v and 16v (d7f and d4f-16v engines). The 8v is gutless but with fewer problems. The 16v tend to be less reliable on the cambelt, so make sure have the assurance of a recent change dependant on mileage (Renault suggest 72K on most, but expect a change much sooner to be certain). A sport model is so much more fun to drive and seems more stable, although that may be lowered suspension and bucket seats adding to an illusion of safety. The 8v tend to have far simpler, fewer and cheaper components to maintain. They both do very good mileage, and my gut feeling is the 1.4s are more likely to have been abused by younger drivers than the 1.2s. Look for a service history, expect small leaks (look for these before buying, feel along the roof lining, around the footwells and inside doors). Corrosion should not be a problem with these cars, but you should be checking the interior for previous removal of trim, questioning why if suspect. The sunroof will most likely rattle in a Mk2 but, this is something you get used to or fix very cheaply.
Currently in mah14681's garage:
