A diesel will always be around 20-30% better on fuel, however, your driving style needs to adapt to using a higher gear than you would in a petrol. (otherwise they just seem gutless).

Pitfalls are more frequent oil changes to avoid damaging the turbo , but they can also be remapped much easier, and will tend to be worth more when it's time to sell it on.
