Main beam wouldn't turn off

Hi everyone,

Had a bizarre problem this morning.

Was on my way to work, the headlights were on.. after a couple of miles that main beam came on. I hadn't turned it on and it wouldn't go off no matter what I did. Both the light on the dash and the actual main beams were on.

I even turned off the ignition and pulled out the keys... it remained on.

As I was passing my dealership, I thought I'd pop in and have them take a look at it. As luck had it, yards from their entrance they went off again. Tested all lights (including main beam) and they're turning on and off without a problem.

Any thoughts on the possible cause?

Possibly water ingress into the electrical block connectors but Iím putting my money on a faulty stalk.

Re: Main beam wouldn't turn off - mines too!

I have the same problem. The only difference seems to be that if I turn off the ignition, the lights go off. If I turn on the ignition but not the engine, I can pop the low beam on of off. Regardless of where it's at when I turn the engine on, the high beam will come on. If the low beam was on, it goes off and the main beam comes on. I can't find any relays so I'm assuming it's the stalk. Does anyone else have any thoughts?

Re: Main beam wouldn't turn off

My thought is that whoever wired your lights must have wired them into the first ignition slot. Not 100% but the lights run on a seperate circuit, so if you have your engine off, they will turn on.

0st key turn: Ignition is off, (lights can be used)
1nd key turn: Most power is off except radio and clock
2nd key turn: All electricals can be used.
3rd key turn: Engine turns on.

I'm thinking that instead of the mechanics wiring it to the 0 key turn circuit, they've actually wired it to the 3rd key turn circuit.

Reasoning: Your lights only come on when the ignition is on, but they turn off once the engine is off.

As for the automated part, that's got me. Maybe exposed wires are touching, thus providing power to the lights?
