thanks for all your replies guys, i took the other bulb back and got the correct 5w one from halfords, however it still doesnt seem to work :D.

From reading previous threads i have tried wd40'ing it and twiddling with the wires, but to no avail! Not sure what i should do next???

It might be worth checking the earth

Or it could be a break in the cable.
If you can trace it back into the rear of the car, you should be able to replace it.

Clio Number Plate Lamp.

Water ingress into the terminal connector is common on Clio's.
A new lamp (7700410754) complete with bulb for around a tenner plus the vodka & tonic from your local dealership should sort the problem (along with some electrical contact cleaner for the terminals).
